Basilica di San Marco Venice
Constructed in 829, the astounding Basilica di San Marco in Venice is one of the most glorious buildings in Europe. Built to house the remains of St. Mark, the patron saint of Venice, the church and its surrounding buildings have been under construction and reconstruction for nearly 1200 years.
The exterior of the church is covered in intricate 13th century Byzantine and 16th century Renaissance mosaics. Upon entering, visitors are greeted by one of the most awe-inspiring church interiors in the world. Golden statues and jewel-encrusted relics decorate the alter and tomb of St. Mark. Step upstairs to the Galleria della Basilica, which offers an up-close look of the mosaics and panoramic views of the outside piazza, as well as the bronze Horses of St. Mark.
Romantics will want to wander by the church in the soft evening light: during this time of the day the mosaics are lit up, illuminating this church in a heavenly glow.
