Burano
Nearby the bustling streets of Venice is the island of Burano. Only a 40 minute ferry ride away, this island is one of the areas gems, and can be a welcome break from the throngs of tourists littering the Venice streets. Burano is home a picturesque, tiny fishing village full of pastel houses and fascinating shops, and the craftspeople that reside here are masters of the design and making of intricate lace.
This is the perfect place to sit, wander, relax, and just enjoy the surrounding slow-moving pace of the locals and visitors. Sip a drink in one of the tiny trattories, or have a picnic on the grass of the island's parks. If you are interested in the local lace crafters, visit the excellent Museo del Merletto for information on the background and traditions of this unique technique. This is also the best place to purchase lace, but be aware that many places sell cheap lace imported from Asia - try to speak to one of the women who can be seen hand-knotting lace on their doorsteps or in their shops if you want something authentic.
